01What Comes After Completion

Petichah

Seven is such a number.

And eight is another.

And precisely there the question begins.

What comes after perfection?

Not improvement.

02Seven

Before Eight There Must Be Seven

Six describes expansion.

Seven describes inward gathering.

Six goes outward.

Seven knows what the outward movement was for.

Seven Encircled by the Eighth

Seven filled points, complete. Then the open ring — not crushing them, surrounding them.
03The Hidden Eighth

The Hidden Turn From Hamshachah to Gilui

Seven is hamshachah.

Drawing down.

Eight is gilui.

Disclosure.

The direction turns.

Until now, heaven has been teaching earth.

In the Eighth, earth begins revealing what heaven placed inside it.

04Alef and Zayin

The Secret Contained in אז

There is a tiny word that contains an entire cosmology.

אז.

Alef.

Zayin.

One and seven.

Eight.

The Alef does not destroy the Zayin.

It crowns it.

Alef and Zayin

One joined to seven. The Alef does not destroy the Zayin. It crowns it.
05The Octave

The Octave: The First Note Returns Without Becoming the Same Note

The seven notes form an ordered scale.

The eighth returns to the first.

And yet nobody who hears an octave thinks the eighth note is simply a pointless repetition.

It is the same name at another height.

Do returns as Do.

The identity is preserved.

The register changes.

The Octave

Seven notes complete the scale. The eighth is the first, at another height.
06The Covenant of the Eighth Day

Bris Milah: The Eighth Written Into the Body

The covenant of Avraham is commanded on day eight.

This should astonish us every time.

The bond that is למעלה מן הטבע is not left in a metaphysical heaven.

It is written into flesh.

The body becomes the parchment of transcendence.

07The Eighth Day of the Mishkan

The Eighth Day of the Mishkan

For seven days the Mishkan is inaugurated.

Then Torah says:

“ויהי ביום השמיני.”

“And it was on the eighth day.”

Something changes.

08The Harp of Eight Strings

The Harp of Eight Strings

Chazal teach:

“כנור של ימות המשיח של שמונה נימין.”

“The harp of the days of Moshiach will have eight strings.”

In the Beis HaMikdash, the harp is associated with seven.

In Yemos HaMoshiach, eight.

The Harp of Eight Strings

“The harp of the days of Moshiach will have eight strings.”
09Or Yashar

Seven Is Or Yashar

Kabbalah speaks of אור ישר, direct light.

It descends.

Source to recipient.

Higher to lower.

Cause to effect.

Keter toward Malchus.

Or Yashar, Or Chozer

Direct light descends from Keter to Malchus. Returning light rises from the lowest point and encompasses the whole.
10Or Chozer

Eight Is Or Chozer

The recipient receives.

But genuine reception changes what was given.

Or chozer rises.

The light returns from below.

Yet because she receives everything, she becomes the point from which everything can return.

Emptiness becomes capacity.

Low becomes gateway.

End becomes beginning.

11Malchus

Malchus: The Last Sefirah and the First Purpose

But Chassidus repeatedly overturns simplistic rank.

The lowest may be last in manifestation and first in intention.

A king desires a kingdom.

The kingdom appears after the king.

But kingship was part of the desire that set the process in motion.

12The Eighth Queen

The Eighth Queen

Within revealed order, however, the feminine and Malchus possess a future elevation expressed through astonishing verses.

“נקבה תסובב גבר.”

“The feminine shall encompass the masculine.”

But Kabbalistically it becomes geometry.

What once appeared beneath becomes makif.

The receiver reveals a root capable of encompassing what previously appeared above it.

Crown and Head

Pnimi within. Makif around. The crown surrounds the head without displacing it.
13The Seventh Generation

The Seventh Generation as Threshold

The Rebbe called the generation the last generation of galus and the first generation of Geulah.

This phrase contains the entire mystery of transition.

Last and first.

Because the threshold belongs to both rooms.

Stand in a doorway.

Yet the doorway itself is a single place.

The Generations

Seven generations from the Alter Rebbe, and the conceptual Eighth the sefer proposes — a Messianic stage, not an appointed office.
14A Dwelling in the Lower Realms

דירה בתחתונים

Chassidus gives us perhaps the most audacious statement concerning creation:

“נתאוה הקב״ה להיות לו יתברך דירה בתחתונים.”

The Holy One, blessed be He, desired to have a dwelling in the lower realms.

Not merely a throne above.

A dwelling below.

The Eighth is the maturation of dirah betachtonim.

Seven constructs the dwelling.

Eight reveals the Resident.

15Moshiach as the Eighth

Moshiach as the Eighth Generation From the Alter Rebbe

The first is Alef.

The completed chain is Zayin.

The Messianic disclosure is Az.

א + ז.

One upon seven.

The Alter Rebbe returns not as biography, but as fulfilled principle.

The first note returns at the octave.

And now the number can stand without explanation

The Eighth

השמיני

And now the number can stand without explanation for a moment.

Eight.

השמיני.

What comes after completion but was present before completion as intention.

What stands beyond nature but seeks nature rather than fleeing it.

What surrounds the seven and therefore can hold all seven without dissolving their distinctions.

What comes after the seventh day but returns as the first note of a new octave.
